A seemingly trivial dispute over food escalated into a deadly confrontation on Friday night, leaving a young man dead and his attacker on the run.
The deceased has been identified as 18-year-old Devante Hutchinson, also known as “Bolt,” a resident of Cook Street in Savanna-la-Mar, Westmoreland.
Reports are that around 11:30 PM, a 10-year-old boy, who is Bolt’s younger brother, went to a cook shop in the community to buy chicken and chips. As the boy was walking home with his food, he was approached by 18-year-old Tevin Gil, also known as “Wacky”, who demanded a portion of the meal.
When the boy refused to share his food, Wacky allegedly began hitting him. Bolt, who was nearby, witnessed the attack on his younger brother and intervened, confronting Wacky.
The altercation quickly escalated into a physical fight between the two young men. Wacky reportedly left the scene, only to return shortly after, armed with a knife.
He then allegedly used the knife to stab Bolt multiple times, inflicting wounds to his left side, right arm, and lower back.
Bolt collapsed to the ground, and Wacky fled the scene on foot. Residents rushed Bolt to the Savanna-la-Mar Hospital, where he was pronounced dead while undergoing treatment.
The police launched a manhunt immediately for Wacky, who was wanted in connection with the fatal stabbing.
He recently got arrested and is now in police custody.
The incident has left the community in shock, as Bolt and Wy were known to be friends prior to the deadly dispute.
