A wanted man was shot and killed, while three police officers were injured during an alleged confrontation with law enforcement in Mount Salem, St James, early Wednesday morning.
The deceased has been identified as Romario Brown, otherwise called “Jerry.”
According to reports, Brown was fatally shot during a police operation along Crawford Street shortly after 3:00 a.m.
It is alleged that Brown opened fire at a team of police officers who were conducting the operation. The officers reportedly returned fire, during which Brown sustained gunshot wounds.
He was subsequently taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead. A firearm was reportedly recovered following the incident.
Three members of the police team were also injured during the confrontation, the extent of their injuries was not immediately known.
CELLPHONE SAVES POLICE LIFE
Additional details have emerged following the deadly shootout in Mount Salem, St James, with a bulletproof vest and cellphone helping to save the life of one of the injured police officers.
The officer was reportedly shot in the chest during the confrontation. However, the impact was said to have been absorbed in part by the protective vest and cellphone the officer was carrying, preventing what could have been a more serious or fatal injury.
The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) is currently on the scene conducting investigations into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
The Inspectorate of the Jamaica Constabulary Force has also been notified as investigations continue.
