The Bog Walk Gorge in St Catherine remained closed on Tuesday evening as investigators processed the scene of a deadly confrontation that left five men dead and a police officer seriously injured.
According to Senior Superintendent of Police Hopton Nicholson, who heads the St Catherine North Police Division, the officer was shot during the incident. He noted that the constable, who is assigned to the Linstead Police Station, is in “serious but stable” condition.
Nicholson confirmed that five men were fatally shot during the confrontation. Two illegal firearms were reportedly recovered at the scene.
The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has since launched a probe into the circumstances surrounding the four deaths.
The Bog Walk Gorge, a major roadway linking Kingston and St Catherine to sections of northern Jamaica, remained closed while processing continued. Motorists were urged to expect delays and to use alternative routes.
Up to late Tuesday afternoon, authorities had not released the identities of the deceased, and details surrounding the events leading up to the shooting remained unclear.
