Police have launched an investigation into the death of a woman who was fatally shot in Hill Top district, Parottee, St Elizabeth, on Friday morning.
The deceased has been identified as Anishka Thompson, a resident of New Forest, Manchester. The incident reportedly occurred around 8:30 a.m.
According to a senior police source, Thompson’s 38-year-old boyfriend, who is a licensed firearm holder, told investigators he was preparing to leave for work when he removed his firearm from a safe and placed it on a table.
The man reportedly stated that while he was loading the weapon, Thompson playfully picked it up. He claimed that as he attempted to take the firearm back from her, it discharged, striking her.
Thompson was rushed to hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Investigators are awaiting the results of a post mortem examination and ballistic tests as they work to determine whether the shooting was accidental. At this stage, the matter has been classified as a death investigation.
