Two young children lost their lives on Saturday after a fire destroyed a house on Smith Lane in downtown Kingston, leaving relatives and residents of the community devastated.
The children have been identified by family members as four-year-old Samson Cameron, a student at Calabar Basic School and seven-year-old Keriecia Hutchinson, a Grade One student at Calabar All-Age School.
According to residents, the two children were inside the house alone when the fire broke out. The circumstances surrounding why they were left alone, have not been established.
The blaze quickly engulfed the premises, trapping the children inside. Despite efforts to rescue them, both children died in the fire.
One resident made a desperate attempt to save them, soaking himself with water before entering the burning house in an effort to reach them. However, his heroic attempt was unsuccessful.
