In a scene out of a movie, residents of Black River, St Elizabeth are on edge after reports surfaced that a tiger cub has escaped captivity and is now on the loose in the area.
The tiger cub was smuggled into the country. The cub was discovered aboard a vessel interdicted by the coast guard off Jamaica’s South coast.
The vessel was attempting to smuggle contraband into the island and was found carrying four monkeys, 12 parrots, 1 tiger cub and a large quantity of marijuana.
According to official reports from the National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA), the tiger cub is said to be about 6 months old.
The cub in not considered fully dangerous but it is still capable of harming small animals or people if provoked or frightened. The Jamaica Defense Force (JDF) and the National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) are warning residents not to approach or attempt to feed the animal.
The JDF in partnership with NEPA and JCF, and other relevant agencies are working together to locate the animal and ensure public safety.
