A tense late night confrontation between police and armed men along the Linstead Bypass in St. Catherine ended in a deadly exchange of gunfire, leaving three suspects dead and two police officers injured.
According to reports, around 10:30 p.m., police intercepted a white Toyota Axio with five men on board. When signalled to stop, the occupants allegedly opened fire on the officers, sparking a fierce gun battle.
During the exchange, two members of the police force were shot. One was treated and released, while the other remains hospitalised in stable condition. Three of the gunmen were also struck and later pronounced dead at hospital.
The remaining two suspects reportedly escaped the scene on foot, continuing to fire at the pursuing officers. A major manhunt is now underway to locate and apprehend them.
Investigators say two firearms were recovered from the scene. The police report that the operation was part of ongoing intelligence driven efforts to dismantle armed criminal networks operating in St. Catherine and nearby parishes.
The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has been notified and is conducting a probe into the incident.
