The police have launched an investigation into the suspected suicide of 26-year-old accountant and former beauty pageant contestant, Tyra Spaulding.
Spaulding, who competed in the 2023 Miss Jamaica Universe pageant, was reportedly found by relatives on Tuesday night with a curtain tied around her neck. The Corporate Communications Unit (CCN) has since confirmed that a probe is underway.
Known for her advocacy in mental health awareness and suicide prevention, Spaulding had raised concerns among friends and colleagues in recent weeks after posting a series of troubling messages on social media.
In an August 15 Instagram post, she admitted she was “going through hell.” Just two weeks ago, she uploaded a video to her YouTube channel titled Don’t Be Sad, where she openly discussed her mental health struggles.
“I’m fighting for my life… my mind is trying to kill me,” she said thirty seconds into the video. She also revealed that she faced recurring suicidal thoughts daily, admitting that while she did not want them, she often felt death might be easier than living.
“It’s like there are two different me’s. One of them wants me to live and one of them wants me to die,” Spaulding shared in the emotional recording.
Her sudden passing has left many in shock, particularly as she had been a visible advocate for the very issues she battled privately.

A February 2025 report revealed that suicide deaths have been on a steady rise for four consecutive years, increasing to 67 in 2024. This marks the highest figure since 2001, when 75 suicides were recorded.
The data further highlights a troubling gender gap: between 2021 and 2024, men accounted for 217 suicide deaths more than eight times the number recorded among women.
