Police are investigating the heartbreaking discovery of a 10-year-old child’s body in the Tyre district near Troy, south Trelawny, on Tuesday evening.
According to residents, the body was found shortly after 6:00 p.m. in a bushy area, prompting an immediate alarm and a swift response from law enforcement officers.
Residents reported that a farmer searching for one of his cows made the grim discovery before alerting others in the community.
Police and residents named the child as 10-year-old Shanai Coke, otherwise called “Kaidra”, a Troy Primary student.
Unconfirmed reports from residents alleged that the child may have been sexually assaulted before being killed. However, police have not officially confirmed those claims, and investigations are ongoing to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the child’s death.
Tensions flared in the community following the discovery, with residents reportedly attacking a man they accused of being responsible for the child’s death. During the incident, the man’s father was also injured.
Both men were reportedly transported to hospital for treatment. The suspect succumbed to his injuries and his father condition is not yet known.
Police remain at the scene processing evidence as investigations continue into the tragic incident.
