Why Is Mental Health So Important? Mental health is vital to personal well being, interpersonal relationships and family and social functioning. Mental disorders often contribute to a wide host of difficulties which can include pain, disability, or even death if not treated or cured. What most people do not realize is that mental health has a lot to do with brain health.
The best way to prevent mental disorders is through prevention. This is achieved by identifying and dealing with any problems, and learning effective coping mechanisms. A good way to cope with anxiety, depression, panic attacks and phobias is to learn how to relax and breathe deeply. A simple exercise of closing your eyes when you feel anxious will usually help you calm down. Another great way to prevent mental health issues is to learn how to cope effectively with stress, whether it’s coming from work, family, or school.
In addition to learning effective coping mechanisms, why is mental health important? Another way to prevent suffering from depression and other mental disorders is to seek treatment for any existing conditions. Depression is the most common mental disorder in America today. Millions of dollars are spent each year on both prescription drugs and preventative treatments for depression and anxiety.
There are many symptoms that affect a person’s mental health and they range from sadness to guilt, from fear to anger, from lack of interest to creativity. As you can see, there are many different affects of living with a mental illness, but why is mental health so important? One of the main reasons is that treatment for mental illnesses is very expensive. With all of the money that is being poured into treating mental disorders, it is imperative that we as a society spend a little bit more time taking care of ourselves.
Another reason is that mental disorders can affect one’s ability to cope with everyday activities. The inability to cope with daily tasks can have drastic affects on a person’s physical health as well. If you suffer from serious anxiety or depression, you may find it difficult to work, maintain employment, or take care of yourself in general.
Why is mental health important? The ability to live a full and productive life is imperative to everyone. People who are able to perform to their full capacity have greater opportunities in life, enjoy higher self-esteem, and have greater success in accomplishing daily tasks. If you think about it, don’t you think it’s important to be able to enjoy the little things in life rather than be consumed by them? Having mental disorders can make it extremely difficult to enjoy the little things in life.
Lastly, why is mental health important if there are so many people that suffer from it? One in five adults has a mental illness or disorder in the United States. People who have serious mental disorders are more likely to have a lower income, have less happy marriages, and experience more financial difficulties in their lives. If someone you love suffers from mental disorders, there is a strong chance that you will have negative effects in your relationships and your life as a whole. This is not to say that every case of mental disorders is going to have a detrimental effect, but there is a strong possibility that people who have mental disorders will have an impact on their relationships and their lives.
Stigma is one of the biggest barriers that an individual with a mental illness faces in their lives. Stigma can vary from a small amount of fear, to feeling embarrassed, to complete withdrawal from society. These feelings can lead to even more serious mental health problems, such as suicide. In the case of suicide, statistics show that individuals who suffer from depression are more likely to attempt suicide at least two times. Even though stigma can prevent many people with mental illnesses from seeking treatment, they do exist.
