A man accused of attempting to sexually assault a woman in the Bermaddy community of St Catherine has died after he was reportedly attacked by residents.
His identity has not yet been disclosed by authorities.
According to police reports, the incident occurred about 8:00 p.m. on Friday when the man allegedly assaulted a woman and attempted to rape her. The woman reportedly managed to break free and raised an alarm by shouting “rape,” which alerted nearby community members.
The suspect reportedly fled the area before law enforcement officers arrived on the scene.
The matter was later reported to the police, and a team conducted searches in the community; however, the suspect was not located at that time.
Reports indicate that around 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, the man was spotted back in the community, where he was allegedly attacked by a group of individuals. He was reportedly chopped and beaten with various objects during the assault.
The injured man was subsequently taken to the Linstead Community Hospital, where he later died while receiving treatment.
The Linstead Criminal Investigation Branch has since launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
