Police have identified the man who drowned after reportedly jumping from a moving police vehicle into the Rio Cobre while crossing the Flat Bridge in St Catherine on Wednesday.
The deceased has been identified as 73-year-old Melton Smith, a farmer from Mickelton Meadows in Linstead.
According to police reports, Smith was a suspect in a case of alleged abduction and carnal abuse. He was being transported from Linstead to Spanish Town when, upon reaching the vicinity of the Flat Bridge, he allegedly jumped from the service vehicle and plunged into the river below.
Efforts to rescue him proved unsuccessful, and his body was later retrieved from the water.
